Holistic and Complementary Medicine Clinic

Consultations in our clinic in Sheffield with our team of experienced holistic practitioners are available Monday to Saturday, including some evenings. You can book appointments online, drop into the shop, or phone us on 0114 2550022. Herbal consultations are also available online

Our team of herbalists, Robyn James, Carol Burnett, Joy Holmes and Daniel Crawford offer consultations in person at the Herbarium in Sheffield and also online via Zoom or WhatsApp.

Our professional herbalists will give you time and space to tell your story. We then work together to make sense of how you have got here and how to get better. We will use both our technical knowledge and our intuition to create an individualised herbal treatment plan for you.

Herbal medicine can address a wide range of physical and emotional problems. For example, whilst more research is needed, there is growing evidence to support the use of herbal medicine as an effective treatment in the following conditions and more besides:

How does herbal medicine work?

Herbal medicine is both an art and a science.

A science: Plants rely on chemistry to protect themselves from threats and communicate with their allies. For example, if a plant is damaged, it will produce antiseptic chemicals to ward off infection.. These are often antiseptic for us as well.

An art: But herbs also have more subtle and complex characters.  Our herbalists use these ‘energetic’ qualities to match the right herb to the patient.

What to expect

In the first consultation, the herbalist will fully discuss your health problems with you. This usually takes over an hour. Together we will try to understand the underlying patterns that have caused your ill health. The herbalist will then usually prescribe and make up an individualised prescription of herbal medicines for you to take away.

Subsequent consultations are shorter, usually around 45 minutes, including dispensing. The herbalist will discuss progress, suggest the next steps, and adjust the herbal prescription as needed.

Our herbalists are all trained to degree level in herbal medicine. Between us we have a wealth of practical clinical experience, from simple first aid to long term chronic conditions.

We also offer a low cost clinic on two or three days per month. On these days, consultations are taken by trainee herbalists under the supervision of one of our experienced professional practitioners. Consultations in this clinic are subsidised.

About sports & Remedial Massage

To book your treatment for sports & remedial massage with Kate Sheridan, contact her on 07957 162347 or herbalkate@gmail.com

I offer a person centred approach to the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and pain, using massage and other soft tissue techniques to relax tissues and improve movement. So when you come for a treatment with me I treat you as a whole person rather than just looking at the painful area in isolation; I want to know as much about you as possible.

As part of the Sports & remedial massage consultation I look at posture and movement and take a history. This helps me to place your muscular aches within a context, for instance an old injury whose residual effects may be causing muscular tension in another area; long periods of stress; a chronic illness; a job with repetitive movements. Often the underlying issue that requires treatment is in another area to where the symptoms are manifesting.

Sports & Remedial Massage therapy helps to relieve muscular aches, pain and tension whether caused by sporting activity, repetitive or stressful daily activities, injury, or illness and prolonged inactivity. It benefits both acute and long standing conditions. Massage is also helpful where there is mental and emotional tension as it promotes relaxation and a sense of well being; it can also help us be more aware of our bodies and how we are feeling. It is suitable for everyone of all ages and occupations. It can help with postural, accident and work related muscular problems such as whiplash, headaches, sciatica, RSI and back and neck stiffness or pain. It is beneficial alongside other treatments to ensure good recovery from surgery and injury.

Appointments last 45 minutes (£35) or an hour (£45). For most of the treatment you will be lying down but I may also ask you to stand and move around as part of the assessment and treatment and to explore with you different ways of moving so it is advisable to wear suitable underwear. Exercises and stretches may be recommended alongside massage to achieve lasting benefit. More information can be found on my website https://katesheridan.org/

We offer acupuncture sessions at our Sheffield clinic with Melvin Timm

Acupuncture is perhaps best known for relief of chronic pain, for which it is even recommended by the NHS . The NHS also recommends acupuncture for chronic tension headaches, migraines, prostatitis and hiccups.

But acupuncture can be used for a much wider range of physical and also emotional or mental health issues. Needling is used to influence the movement of energy (or ‘qi’) through the channels (or meridians) in which it flows through the body. Rebalancing this energy is a powerful way to improve health.

Melvin’s acupuncture incorporates different styles, which enables him to suit his treatment to the client. He was originally trained in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine – a Chinese Communist invention) at college, and has gone on to study a range of other approaches. He adapts his needling technique to suit the client – some like it heavy and others much lighter.

Melvin charges £35 per session.

About Craniosacral Therapy and Fascial Unwinding

To book your treatment with Emily, contact her on 07949 384445 or emilydean8114@gmail.com

Craniosacral therapy uses light touch to listen deeply for the subtle rhythms or tides that move within the many layers of your system. It provides a space for anything that restricts their flow to be met and released. I experience it as listening for the stories that are waiting to be heard and allowing them to be expressed. Each treatment session is different. You may experience deep relaxation and a release of physical pain or tension. There may be emotional release or connection with memories held in your tissues. I am guided by your body and I trust that your system knows what to do. Sessions take place fully clothed and usually lying on your back, although this can be adapted if necessary.

People often find craniosacral therapy helpful for issues such as anxiety, stress, insomnia, digestive issues, chronic pain and illness. However, as the focus of this therapy is on accessing your body’s inherent health and wellbeing, it is safe and helpful for everyone.

Fascial Unwinding follows a similar process, with more of a focus on physical expression and following patterns of movement around blocks or restrictions in the body, with the support and holding of the therapist. These movements may be focused on specific limbs, muscles or organs, or may be a sense of the whole body unwinding stuck movement patterns, creating a powerful sense of release. Our fascia forms the continuous ‘matrix’ within which our bodily structures are contained. Release of restrictions or disturbances at this level can have significant physical and emotional implications.

Fascial unwinding often emerges as part of the craniosacral therapy treatment process but can also be worked with more intentionally during a session. It would always be combined with holding and grounding techniques used in craniosacral therapy.

The Alexander Technique (AT) is a somatic approach that will help you release muscle and mental tension and move toward freedom and ease.

In a supportive and nurturing environment, we will work together towards an empowering body and mind connection, where you will observe habits that have formed through trauma or the everyday pressures of life, and learn to build new and desirable neurological pathways.

Through this work you will gain better posture, more ease of movement and greater self-confidence.

Many come to the Alexander Technique for help with pain, including neck, back and shoulder pain, and many find it helps with these symptoms. What can come as a pleasant surprise is that the AT has so much more to offer than just the release of pain. Greater self-awareness and mental clarity are included in the benefits that many find this holistic approach has to offer.

What happens in an Alexander Technique treatment?

You will be asked to lie fully clothed on the couch. After that you are ready you will be asked to do some basic movements from standing. During this you will receive gentle ‘hands-on’. This process will help you identify where you you carry tension and give you guidance on how to release it. When the big muscles are released the postural muscles can work efficiently.

What Should I Wear?

Please wear comfortable clothing that does not cover your neck. You will remain fully clothed. The room is kept warm and I will have blankets for those who feel the cold.

How Will I Feel?

As individuals we will each experience the Alexander Technique differently, but you may feel very tired for the first few sessions as you release lots of tension. If are in pain then you may feel less pain in and between sessions. As you come for more sessions you will gain greater insight into where your tensions are and how they are affecting your life. You will experience how you can truly look after yourself.

How Many Sessions Will I need?

Every person is different and it depends on your reason for coming to the sessions. A randomised controlled trial in 2008 showed that a year after having only 6 Alexander Technique sessions chronic lower back pain was significantly reduced. To get more profound benefits you may want 20-30 sessions. You may decide to come for regular  sessions for years as part of self care.

What About My Emotional Well-being?

It is common for the releasing of tension in the body to be accompanied by the releasing of a memories and emotions. When this happens I will be there for you. Whether you want to share your experiences with me or prefer privacy, you will be treated with empathy and respect at all times.

Reiki is an ancient and simple system of ‘laying on of hands’ that uses gentle touch to reduce the effects of stress, balance the nervous system and promote a deep sense of relaxation. This practice, originally from Japan, can relieve pain and promote natural, self-healing, which also encourages mental wellbeing. Reiki is performed on the massage table with the client fully clothed.

Out of all the five senses, smell I directly connected to our emotions. Specific scents can promote relaxation, reduce stress, and alleviate depression. When essential oils are used with massage, the treatment can have deeply therapeutic and profound effects, bringing comfort and reassurance.

This holistic massage uses oils and massage techniques that are stimulating, invigorating, and relaxing for all the muscles in the body, and aims to bring the body and mind back into balance.
